The Affordable Care Act and Small Businesses

As we're all aware, the Affordable Care Act has the potential to drastically change how you structure your benefits policy and the cost of your insurance premiums. As part of an outreach project, the SBA (www.sba.gov) is educating small business owners about the Affordable Care Act and the provision that they need to know about. The SBA has upcoming webinars scheduled for the following dates:

ConsensusDocs Releases a New Joint Venture LLC Agreement

Contract is First of its Kind for the Design and Construction Industry

WASHINGTON – ConsensusDocs released the new ConsensusDocs 299 Joint Venture LLC Agreement today, which provides the first industry standard contract for joint ventures of contractors, contract managers, design builders and design professionals utilizing an LLC model. The agreement is flexible to accommodate joint ventures between contractors, construction managers and design builders, as well as those incorporating an architect, engineer or other design professional.

Gender-Bending Small Businesses That Break Stereotypes

Penny Pompei was left seething last year when on a trip to Capitol Hill, she bumped into a male senator. Pompei introduced herself as the executive director of Women Construction Owners & Executives, a trade group that represents women in the construction industry, and attempted to start a conversation when the senator cut her off abruptly.

“He looked at me strangely and said, ‘Wow, women own construction companies? Who knew!’” she remembers. “I was immediately frustrated. I mean, c’mon, it’s 2012.”

Karen Barbour featured in Forbes article

Karen Barbour, president of The Barbour Group co-chairs state committees, testifies in Congress, and serves on her local economic development committee. Her business is providing surety bonds to contractors and much of it involves government contracts.

“My industry needs to change,” Barbour says. “Small businesses need to wake up. She has advocated for change in everything from the way small business credit scores are dinged when they seek bonding from multiple companies to making government agencies unbundle contracts so small bidders have a better chance.
