Straight Talk: House Votes To Give Tax Relief To Small Businesses

I can’t think of a more appropriate week to evaluate our nation’s tax policies and how they affect small businesses than tax week. On Wednesday, our Committee held a hearing about how upcoming tax increases will affect small firms; specifically, the health care law taxes and the expiring tax rates at the year’s end. What we heard is that small firms need relief now more than ever.

Bipartisan JOBS Act Passes Congress

This week, Congress worked together to help small businesses by passing the JOBS Act and sending it to the President. Access to capital continues to be a significant challenge for entrepreneurs and small firms who want to start or grow their business. The JOBS Act helps small business by easing the process of going public and providing more opportunities for investment capital.

Straight Talk: Five Small Biz Contracting Bills One Step Closer to Enactment

Our Committee continued its work this week to help level the playing field for small business contracting opportunities. On Thursday, our Committee passed five contracting bills that are now ready to be considered by the full House. These bills are the product of over 10 Committee hearings where we heard directly from small business owners about their frustrations with the federal procurement system.

Straight Talk: Big Week for Small Businesses in the House of Reps

It was a big week for small businesses in the House of Representatives.

On Wednesday, in a bipartisan effort, the Committee passed six contracting bills that will allow more opportunities for small firms to participate in federal procurement. This is a win-win for small business owners, American workers and the taxpayer. Small businesses are the catalyst to lead us out of recession. Promoting wider participation in the contracting system will get us there faster.

Straight Talk: Rising Gas Prices Strain Small Businesses

Gas prices have consistently risen for more than 25 straight days now. The nationwide average stands at around $3.74 a gallon— when only a month ago the average was $3.45 a gallon.

Needless to say, energy costs are putting quite a dent in everyone’s wallet right now. This is especially true for small business owners who are already struggling to make payroll, deal with regulations and figure out how to comply with the health care law.

Straight Talk: 3rd Anniversary of the Failed Stimulus Bill and Still the Status Quo Remains

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of the President’s failed stimulus spending bill. Since that time, unemployment has skyrocketed and still remains above 8 percent and the national debt has increased by $4.6 trillion dollars, leaving us with over $15 trillion in total debt.

Straight Talk: Maximizing Small Business Contracting Opportunities

In continuation of the House Small Business Committee’s efforts to address impediments to small businesses in the federal procurement process, Committee members introduced three bipartisan bills this week.

Straight Talk: Small Businesses Want A New Agenda For A New Year

Tuesday night’s State of the Union address left the nation with more of the same from the Obama administration: more Big Government policies and divisive rhetoric.

Straight Talk: Freedom for Small Businesses

As the 112th Congress enters its second session there is no issue more vital than unleashing the power of America’s small businesses. The faster that Washington moves out of the way, the faster we will see small businesses flourish and American’s back on the job.

Straight Talk: The Holiday Wish List of Small Business Owners

If small business owners could have just one wish this holiday season, it would be economic certainty. Certainty is everything for a small business, and Washington can play a substantial role in providing that certainty - or uncertainty. When business owners don’t know what’s on the horizon, they are forced to curtail hiring and halt reinvestment in their business in order to start saving for a possible new law or regulation from the federal government.
