WCOE featured in
national press conference

On Thursday, WCOE's National Executive Director Penny Pompei was invited to make a presentation at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The press conference was organized by WCOE strategic alliance partner, Business Coalition for Fair Competition (BCFC), a Washington DC based coalition of business organizations and private think tanks. Joining Penny as presenters were the organizer, John Palatiello (President of BCFC), Grover Norquist (President of Americans for Tax Return), Manny Rosales (The Latino Coalition), Larry Hart (American Conservative Union), and Christian Zur (US Chamber of Commerce). This broad based coalition is focused on key issues affecting government competition with the private sector.

Labeled as the "Yellow Pages" test, the group believes the government should not be involved in doing anything that can easily be found in a quick Yellow Pages search. BCFC's research has found an unprecedented level of government expansion into numerous activities that should be left to the private sector where – as Penny said – entrepreneurs can always do anything better, faster and cheaper. A Yellow Pages Caucus has been formed by members in both the House and the Senate to support the goals of this coalition. A scorecard of House and Senate key votes during the 112th Congress dramatically points to those who support free enterprise and small business and those who support a bigger government that competes with free enterprise. You can view the scorecard and press release on our website.

WCOE member issues highlighted in AmEx article

Yesterday also saw the publication of a web article on American Express Open Forum which includes excerpts from an interview of Penny by business writer Katie Morell about gender stereotypes in small business. Yes, we have come a long way baby – but we still have a long way to go.

Congress passes one last bill before adjourning for elections

Before turning out the lights in Congress late last Friday night, the House passed the "Contaminated Drywall Safety Act of 2012". This bill would urge the Commerce Department to take steps to eliminate the importation of unsafe drywall from China while the Consumer Product Safety Commission would be directed to issue new rules.  Additionally the contaminated drywall is added as a banned substance. The Commerce secretary also should "insist" that the Chinese government direct companies that manufacture and export drywall to submit to U.S. federal court jurisdiction in cases involving "problematic" drywall. There is no companion bill in the Senate and this bill is expected to join the hundreds of other DOA (Dead On Arrival) House passed bills languishing in the Senate.
