WCOE has announced the annual leadership conference will be held in Washington DC at the Willard Hotel April 3 to 5, 2016. The event will host women from across the nation for networking, speakers and special events including visits to Capitol Hill. Conference details will be available soon.
Construction to Start in Spring on $2B Luxury Resort
Construction of the $2 billion Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley in Paradise Valley, Arizona, should start this spring and finish in 2018. The project will include a hotel as well as residential and retail space.
MN Governor Wants $1.4B for Public Construction Projects
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is proposing to borrow $1.4 billion for public construction and renovation projects. A good portion of the funds – $440 million – would go to improve water quality and infrastructure. The state legislature must adopt the proposal.
Beam-signing Ceremony Held at $425M NY Casino Project
A beam-signing ceremony was recently held to mark progress at the $425 million Lago Resort & Casino in Tyre, N.Y. Steel construction was to begin over the weekend, and roof work should start in about a month. The project will need 1,800 construction workers to build a hotel, casino, spa and entertainment venue along with retail and restaurant space.
Contractors Prepare for Stormwater Controls in CA
Stormwater controls are a big deal in meeting regulatory compliance on construction sites. Contractors in Southern California expect to be quite busy putting those controls in place, as expected El Nino storms could bring massive amounts of rain. "The biggest issue other than the cost of implementing all these controls is the schedule," said Casey Arndt, Carlsbad's municipal projects manager, who noted that construction stops almost 48 hour ahead of a storm so workers can focus their attention on controlling the impending runoff instead.
Construction Material Prices Continue Free Fall in December
Construction material prices fell for the sixth consecutive month in December, losing 1.2 percent on a monthly basis and 4 percent on a yearly basis according to an analysis of the Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index recently released by Associated Builders and Contractors. Construction input prices have fallen 7.2 percent since peaking in August 2014, and have fallen eleven of the previous sixteen months. Nonresidential construction input prices exhibited similar declines, falling 1.1 percent for the month and 4 percent for the year.
