National Women's History Museum Announces Women Making History Event

NWHMThe NWHM announces Women Making History to be held on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the Mayflower Hotel, 1127 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC. There will be a VIP and sponsors reception from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, followed by the general reception at 6:30 pm and the program at 7:15 pm.

Honorary Co-chairs for the event are Senator Lisa Murkowski and Representative Linda Sanchez. Honorees for the evening will be Lisa Sugar, Co-founder and President of PopSugar, The Honorable Ann Veneman, Secretary of Agriculture (2001-2005), and Christine Walevska, World Renowned cellist and master musician. 5th Annual Awards Celebrating Women Who Move the Nation

to Be Held

COMTOThe Conference of Minority Transportation officials (COMTO) will host its annual Celebrating Women Who Move the Nation awards breakfast on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, from 8 am to 11 am at the J.W. Marriott, 1331 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC.

Fourteen outstanding women, representing multi-modes within the transportation industry, will be recognized and saluted for their contributions to the industry. Nearly 500 attendees, representing all sectors of the transportation industry, including government and private firms, are expected to join the celebration.

Honorees include:

Construction Started on NJ's Tallest Skyscraper

China Overseas America held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 900-foot-tall 99 Hudson Street tower in New Jersey. When finished, it will be the tallest tower in the state and possibly the sixth tallest in the country. The mixed-use project will contain 781 condos as well as commercial space. It is expected to cost at least $500 million, with completion planned for 2018.

Site Work Started at $4B Dallas Mixed-use Development

Environmental and pre-demolition work is underway at a $4 billion redevelopment project in Dallas that will cover about 17 blocks. Six companies have bid on the demolition work, which will include taking down a building brick by brick. That work is expected to begin in May. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2017.

$1B Gas-fired Power Plant Proposed in Illinois

Competitive Power VenturesCompetitive Power Ventures is planning to build a $1 billion gas-fired power plant in Illinois on an 80-acre site. The project will create up to 500 construction jobs and ultimately supply enough energy for 1.1 million homes. The company plans to begin construction in 2018 and finish by 2021.

$1B NFL Stadium Proposed in Las Vegas

Las Vegas Sands Corp.Las Vegas Sands Corp. and a group of investors are proposing a $1 billion sports stadium in Las Vegas. The domed stadium would be home to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, football team, but the developers are hoping to lure a National Football League team, such as the Oakland Raiders. The 65,000-seat facility would be built on 42 acres.

Bertha Won't be Digging Anytime Soon in Seattle

Tunneling was stopped Jan. 13 at the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement project in Seattle after a sinkhole was discovered. The contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners, said the problem has been remedied, but the state halted boring by the TBM Bertha, which had been idle for two years while repairs were made. STP has asked the state to let tunneling resume. That plea was rejected, and the state has asked for more information about the sinkhole's cause.

Boston, Wynn Reach Agreement on Casino Construction

Wynn ResortsThe city of Boston and Wynn Resorts have reached a settlement that moves forward the start of construction for a $1.7 billion casino and hotel project in nearby Everett. Wynn will pay Boston $31 million over the next 15 years. The 3 million-square-foot casino and resort will feature a 24-story tower and is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs

SCDOT Looks at $484M Freeway Widening Project

SCDOTA new port terminal project in South Carolina should open in 2019, and that will increase traffic on Interstate 26. The state's Department of Transportation wants to add lanes to the highway near Charleston and upgrade the bridges along that stretch. Planning, design and construction could take six years.
