Armed with information packets and WCOE's 2017 Position Paper, WCOE members visited ninety Congressional offices on Capitol Hill as part of the 2017 Women Build America Annual Leadership Conference's Legislative Day on Tuesday, April 4, 2017. Lee Cunningham, Legislative Affairs Committee Chair, conducted outreach in the months leading up to the Conference. Then, on Tuesday morning, Legislative Affairs Committee members Deborah Wilder, Lorraine D' Angelo, and Margery Newman shared tips on speaking with Congressional representatives.

                 

WCOE 2017 Leadership Conference Held in Washington D.C.

       

WCOE's 2017 Women Build America Annual Leadership Conference was held in Washington, D.C. on April 2–4, 2017. The three-day Conference started with High Tea Celebration on Sunday afternoon followed by dine-arounds, Monday speakers and panelists, Monday night's Awards Gala, and culminated with the Legislative Day and lunch at the Willard Hotel.

On Monday, April 3, 2017, WCOE held its annual Awards Gala at the Willard Hotel. The evening featured a visit and inspirational remarks by Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and keynote speaker, Sarah Susanka, acclaimed author of The Not So Big House series, Home By Design, and The Not So Big Life. Ms. Susanka's "Not So Big" message has become a launch pad for a new dimension of understanding – not just about how we inhabit our homes, but also about how we inhabit our planet and even our day-to-day lives. WCOE presented Senator Cortez Masto with the Influential Woman in Government Award, and Ms. Susanka was honored with the Influential Woman in Business Award. WCOE also honored MGM Resorts as Influential Company of the Year (award accepted by Gerri Harris on behalf of MGM), Lee Cunningham with the Legacy Achievement Award, and Sophia Cavalli with the Advocate of the Year Award. Capping the evening was the installation ceremony for the 2017–2018 National Board of Directors.

WCOE WCOE Conference Attendees Share Success Stories

       

The second annual Success Stone Ceremony was held during High Tea at the 2017 Women Build America Annual Leadership Conference held at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. The Success Stone Ceremony celebrates the successes of Conference attendees as stories of their business achievements are shared while they come to the podium to receive a Success Stone.

Atlanta Falcons Stadium Set for Late Summer Completion

 

Atlanta FalconsThe Atlanta Falcons are building a $1.6 billion football stadium, and the project's complicated retractable roof has created construction delays. The team's owner, Arthur Blank, says the project will be completed toward the end of summer, although the Atlanta United soccer team has a July 30 game planned there.

         

$1 Billion Interstate Expansion in PA to Start in 2018

 

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will soon begin improving Interstate 83 in the Harrisburg area. The $1 billion project will widen 6 miles of the highway, which will require rebuilding several bridges, constructing two new bridges, reconfiguring a huge interchange, tearing down about 20 houses and installing a noise-reducing barrier.

         

Kinder Morgan, DCP Midstream Join Forces on Permian
   Pipeline Project

 

Kinder Morgan has recruited DCP Midstream to jointly develop a planned natural gas pipeline project in Texas from Waha in the Permian Basin to Agua Dulce in the Corpus Christi area. Kinder Morgan will build and operate the 430-mile Gulf Coast Express Pipeline, scheduled to come online in late 2019, while DCP will be a partner and customer.

         

Groundbreaking Held for Part of $1.3 Billion California
   Highway Project

 

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction for a part of the $1.3 billion Highway 4 improvement project in California's Contra Costa County. This portion of the project will build a new interchange and should finish up in 2019.

         

Construction Starts at Mixed-use Project in California

 

A mixed-use development in North Hollywood, Calif. is under construction, and the work should be completed in 2019. The project will include hundreds of apartments, along with restaurant, retail and office space and a movie theater.

         

$1.6 Billion Being Invested to Revitalize Staten Island

 

About $1.6 billion worth of public and private money will help revitalize the waterfront on New York City's Staten Island, according to a report by the New York City Economic Development Corp. The "never-before-seen level of investment in the area" includes the New York Wheel and Empire Outlets.

         

Plan Calls for Post-Katrina Rebuilding in New Orleans'
   Lower 9th Ward

 

The effects of 2005's Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans are still visible in Lower 9th Ward, but the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority has plans to build single-family homes and duplexes on 175 properties in the neighborhood. The plan has received mixed reactions among residents and officials.

         

Toyota to Invest $1.33 Billion in Kentucky Plant

 

Toyota's plans to invest $10 billion in the US over the next five years include a $1.33 billion overhaul to a plant in Georgetown, Ky. The upgrades will streamline production and bring a new paint shop.

           

"Lifestyle Hotel Campus" Being Built at $1.5 Billion
   Mixed-use Project

 

The $1.5 billion Frisco Station is beginning its next phase with the construction of a "lifestyle hotel campus" that will include two hotels. The 242-acre mixed-use project is in Frisco, Texas.

         

Chinese Chemical Company Plans $1 Billion Plant

 

China-based Wanhua Chemical Group plans to build a $1.12 billion production facility in Louisiana that will manufacture methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, which is used for appliance insulation foam. A site has not been selected, but the company has reached an agreement with the state on an incentive package.

         

$3.8 Billion LNG Project in Maryland to Be Finished This Year

 

A $3.8 billion liquefied natural gas project in Maryland's Calvert County has about 3,550 workers on-site and should be completed later this year. The 54-acre Dominion project has used 85,000 cubic yards of concrete, 20,000 tons of steel and 80 miles of piping.

                 

Head of Triple Five Says He'll Fund American Dream Meadowlands

       

Eskandar Ghermezian, head of the family that owns Triple Five, says he will fund construction of American Dream Meadowlands, the mega entertainment mall in New Jersey, until public bonds are sold. Triple Five is moving forward with a similar project in Miami.

                 

$1 B Hospital Campus Proposed in New Jersey Township

       

A 670,000-square-foot hospital proposed in New Jersey's Westampton Township would replace an aging facility. The $1 billion hospital campus with several buildings, which still needs approval from state officials, would be completed in 2022.
